WHAT'S IT LIKE TO BE IN ALPHA?

Alpha Q & A

Q: How does an Alpha Session work?

A: An Alpha session lasts  a bit over 2 hours. You come for a meal, watch a short video, and share your thoughts on the video with your table mates (who you will meet at the first session).

Most people come nervous! So no worries.

During the discussion portion of the session, you can ask your table mates any questions you want. Your session host will ensure the discussion ends on time

Q: When does Alpha begin?  How long is an Alpha Course?

A: Summer Alpha is composed of 9 sessions.  It will begin on June 6 and end on August 8.

There is also an off-site retreat experience, the Alpha Day Away, offered after week 7.  The Day Away will be Saturday, July 28 at the beautiful Kanuga Conference Center Flat Rock, NC.  It's highly recommended.

Q: Can I just ‘come and see’ for the first week?

A: Yes! Just be sure to register with us (so we have a spot for you and enough food too).

Q: Is there childcare available?

A: Yes, and it’s free! You can register for child care at the same time you register for Alpha.

Q: What if I go for a week or two and don’t want to continue?

A: At any point, if you think Alpha isn't for you, that's not a problem. There's no pressure, no follow up and no charge....promise!

Q: I am coming and will not know anybody else. Is that normal?

A: Yes! Lots of people come to Alpha without knowing anybody else on the course. By the end of the course, most people become good friends. Alpha is a great way to meet new people!

Q: How much does Alpha cost?

A: Great news! There's no charge for Alpha. However, we do share a full meal each week so we will ask for voluntary donations to help offset part of the cost of food. The Weekend Away will have a separate cost. However, we never want money to prevent anyone from attending Alpha so we've got you covered if you need.

Q: Do I have to talk and share my thoughts?

A: No! You may remain silent if you wish.

Q: What if I missed the first week?

A: It doesn't matter if you missed the first week of Alpha - you can at least watch the video online. Anyone is able to register up until session 3 (week 3); after that we would encourage you to check back on this website and sign up for our next Alpha course, and start from session 1 (week 1).

Q: My schedule is complicated.  Can I occasionally come to a session time other than the one I registered for?

A: Lots of people face this reality.  We can accomodate you if you notify us when this happens.  Just send an e-mail to alpha@smmcc.org.

Q: I have more questions. Who do I contact?

A: Direct any questions you have to Alpha@smmcc.org.
